On 14 January 2025, we celebrate World Logic Day. UNESCO proclaimed World Logic Day in 2019, in association with the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH), to enhance public understanding of logic and its implications for science, technology and innovation.
Annually on this day (14. January), we remember the death of Kurt Gödel (Brno 1906 – Princeton 1978) as well as the birth of Alfred Tarski (Warsaw 1901 – Berkeley 1983).
Virtual celebration in Austria
In the city of Kurt Gödel, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and the Vienna Circle, mathematical logic and its application to the sciences has a long and rich tradition. The Vienna Center for Logic and Algorithms at Vienna University of Technology (VCLA at TU Wien) is hosted by the following six research groups at the Faculty of Informatics of TU Wien:
- Algorithms and Complexity Group
- Database and Artificial Intelligence Group
- Formal Methods in Systems Engineering Group
- Knowledge-Based Systems Group
- Theory and Logic Group
- Security and Privacy Group
We will be celebrating the World Logic Day 2025 on a digital hub featuring:
- livestream of the Vienna Logic Day Lecture 2025 with Prof. Joao Marques-Silva on “Trustable Explainable AI — A Redemption by Logic”
- collection of quotes by renowned logicians from the fields of computer science, philosophy, mathematics, artificial intelligence.
Celebrations around the globe
The Conseil International de Philosophie et des Sciences Humaines (CIPSH) and its member organisation, the Division for Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science and Technology of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (DLMPST/IUHPST), are coordinating the dynamic and global annual celebration of World Logic Day aiming at fostering international cooperation, promoting the development of logic, in both research and teaching, supporting the activities of associations, universities and other institutions involved with logic, and enhancing public understanding of logic and its implications for science, technology and innovation.
